Students love to send cars, balls and other items down ramps! The faster the better, but did you know that this favorite playtime activity is also an awesome science lesson for kids of all ages? We were able to explore ramps, angles, and friction during our STEAM class with just a few simple materials. This physics activity was a fun way to introduce friction, ramps, and angles to our students through hands-on play! It also allowed our students to have the freedom to think critically and creatively. They were able to test their ramp designs and be able to fail and try again in a safe environment. Through STEAM and activities like this our students are gaining real life knowledge, like the value of failure as a learning opportunity. Take a look at our experiment through our pictures and videos.
America Scores and P.S. 173 have been teaching students' soccer and poetry for several years now. Their goal has been to bring the love of soccer, poetry and a healthy life style to our community. A lot of people have taken notice including ESPN Deportes series “Futbol in America” with Denny Alfonso. During America Scores Winter camp ESPN Deportes visited P.S.173 to interview some of our coaches and players. Denny Alfonso interviewed our very own Mr. Jimenez and Devin Rosario about soccer in America and our Washington Heights community. We can’t wait to see our students and faulty on TV representing P.S.173. Valentine's Day was a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation at P.S. 173. For many of our students, Valentine's Day first becomes important in pre-kindergarten. Our teachers encourage the students to make and decorate art projects, and teach them about sending and receiving mail. Our school spirit of appreciation of our differences really shines on Valentine’s Day. We celebrated the 100th day of school, P.S. 173 style. Students had a blast learning and demonstrating their newly acquired knowledge of numbers and quantities up to 100. Our students and teachers arrived at school dressed in style, 100 year old style. Students were encouraged to create an item to represent the 100th day of school. Some students decorated shirts, created poster boards and other items that showed 100. This was a great way for the children to work creatively and express their interests. The children showed off their creations and celebrated all of their hard work during this school year so far.
The 5th grade students were thrilled to see the Broadway community, they enjoyed several shows. This experience was a cultivating one for our next generation of theatregoers. As we know the arts are a critical part of our student’s educational experience. This was an incredible opportunity for the students.
