Book Character Day: You Look like a Protagonist

10/31/2017

Kids always want to dress up in costumes. Book Character Day allowed us to participate in the fun of dressing up while doing activities aligned with our Reading and Math curriculum. Students partook in a variety of activities dealing with characters and character traits. Some teachers created centers and had students rotate from one activity to the other.  At PS 173 Book Character Day is a fun way to celebrate characters from our favorite books, next time celebrate reading with us!

"Big Pumpkin" by Erica Silverman Inspired Paint & Sip Class

Our first after school Paint & Sip class of the year was a success! Young artists came out with their moms and dads to get in the fall spirit as we drew a colorful pumpkin based on the text, "Big Pumpkin" by Erica Silverman, illustrated by S.D. Schindler. Children were guided step by step by Ms. Riolo using oil pastels with the help of their families and Ms. S. Everyone enjoyed conversation and laughs throughout over snacks and of course, grape juice. Can't wait to see what they create next month!

The Parent Teacher Association will be having a Family Movie Night: featuring Boss Baby on Friday, October 20, 2017. A journey to the movies is an amusing night out, that's why the PTA would like to bring back the family bonding experience. It is a great way to support our school and have some first-class fun. What can be more entertaining than quality time as a family while bringing tremendous goodwill to our school community?

On the uptown side of Manhattan, in a heavily Hispanic community, donations are pouring in from people worried about families on the Caribbean islands ravaged by Hurricane Maria. A temporary donation center at P.S.173 had been set up by PS173M, I Love My Hood & Fundacion Una Mano Amigo to send much needed food and supplies to Puerto Rico & Dominican Republic. Across NYC, donations are being made at drop off sites. P.S173 was set up as a temporary drop off site to offer a convenient location for the community. The community responded by dropping off water, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, clothes, baby wipes and diapers. Throughout the day, people dropped off donations. Administrators and Students sorted packed and loaded items to be dropped off at NYC Donation Site Engine 95, 29 Vermilyea Ave, NY, NY, 10034. As a community we are proud to assist those families in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. P.S.173 would like to thank everyone for their contributions and remind us all that “Together We Make a Difference.”

First Grade Stem Lab..using our five senses

10/1/2017

Our first graders use their five senses daily, but they may not stop to think about how their senses help them learn about the world around them. Experiments dealing with sight, hearing, taste, feeling and smell teach them to work on one specific sense. These science activities develop an understanding of how the senses work together and independently in everyday situations. They were delighted to share their finding with our Principal and assistant principals.
