What are Reading Buddies? It’s when older students from a partnering class come to read with younger students and engage in fun activities. Having a Reading Buddy program in the classroom is one of the things that both older and younger students benefit from in so many ways.

There is magic and mystique during the holidays. PS 173's Ugly Sweater Day is a day of light-hearted fun and a day to be yourself and not that buttoned up. Most importantly, Ugly Sweater Day is a day to make the holidays fun...the way they were intended to be! So this Ugly Sweater Day, students left their school uniforms at home, and teachers kept their preppy wear in their closet. Dear 173 Family, We cannot believe this is our 3rd Winter Read Aloud! Special guest readers, hot chocolate, fun activities and the beauty of a great read aloud. Thank you to our guest readers who shared their love of reading with our students. We are so proud of our community and its members, "Together we are making a difference!" Enjoy the pictures! No other holiday show is more iconic than our long-running upper grade holiday show. Our PS 173 holiday show displays how spectacular our students are with their singing, dancing, and Yuletide cheers. Though some routines are a staple such as “Feliz Navidad” the show presents a fresh look with new material this year. Especially with the addition of our new music teacher Ms.Sable.
The holiday season is upon us at PS 173. Meaning it’s also the most wonderful time of the year for our student’s catchy cheery holiday.-themed show. If you’re looking for the best in dance, music, family themed entertainment look no further than the lower grade holiday show. It was an enjoyable show. Our Pre-k students did an excellent and adorable performance of the “The Grouchy Ladybug.” The Grouchy Ladybug is a multi-layered story that addresses different themes at the same time. Its triple themes of dealing with bullying, comparing sizes, and the telling of time makes this classic one great story to see our students bring to life. As the story about bullies, our Grouchy Ladybug's actors depicted a miniature tyrant, whose actions appear more and more ridiculous as she approaches the larger animals’ actors which become larger and larger. The message of standing up to a bully is an important part of life. We thank the Pre-K team for putting on this show and applaud our young actors for doing an exceptional job. PS 173 has started its first student council to help share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with their teachers and school principals. Our student council will help raise funds for school-wide activities, coordinate social events, community projects, helping people in need and school reform. Congratulations to our 2017-18 student council members!!! Our Student Council members are: Historians- Kimberly Rivera & Brian Castillo Treasurers- Sharia Acosta & Tristan Rodriguez Secretaries- Jesser Pimentel & Aidan Ramirez Vice Presidents- Salvador Farciert & Oriallys Grullon Presidents- Christopher Santos & Ivanna Perez It is a great honor to acknowledge the selected students of the month and the Principal's Honor Roll recipients. These students have worked hard and made academic strides for the first semester of the school year. They are kind to everyone in the school. These are the students that tend to always have a smile on their face when they come into school and continue to wear that smile throughout the day. They have great personalities that light up the room and listen very well. They are also very helpful. Thank you, third, fourth and fifth graders for demonstrating the true spirit of PS 173's motto “Together We Make a Difference.”
Our kindergarten, first and second grade students of the month are the example of our school motto “Together We Make a Difference.” They always obey the rules and are very hard workers. They are doing a great job in the cafeteria during lunch time. We are proud of their accomplishments and very glad to have them in our school community this year. Keep up the good work!
The stage was set, our poems were written, and the PS173 poet-athletes were excited. It was finally time for America SCORES New York’s 14th Annual Poetry SLAM!
A favorite event of kids and coaches alike, the Poetry SLAM gives our talented poet-athletes the opportunity to show off their creative writing skills to peers from other schools and their families. Shannon Schneeman (Executive Director) and Zach Gomes (Program Director) opened the night by welcoming all the poet-athletes as well as their coaches, teachers and families before bringing the host for the night, Natalie Caro onto the stage. Many schools took the stage and did an amazing job. Then, we hit the stage with our first poet Esmarlin performing My Playground which was short and sweet, but very effective. Our girl’s team poem Kindness is Cooler received great reviews. Our PS 173 boys, did not go down without a fight with poems entitled Why I’m Me by Devin, This is My Life by Christopher, and our group poem We Are. While the judges were making some difficult decisions, our poet-athletes expressed themselves in a different way through a wildly competitive dance party! Everyone brought their best moves to the stage and definitely impressed the crowd. Finally, it was time to announce the winners. Christopher received an individual Spirit Award for the poem This is My Life. PS 173 Girls were the big champions winning America Scores Poetry Slam Champions 2017. Incredible sportsmanship and creativity was shown by all of our poet-athletes, and we could not have asked for a better SLAM! |
