Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing kids, teens, and books together. Students and faculty of P.S.173 altered our school to transform it into one big Dr. Seuss collection to celebrate Read Across America. Throughout the week, students and staff made our hallways and classroom look straight out of our favorite Dr. Seuss books. Each floor read one of Dr. Seuss' books, which inspired the decor and activities that went on in each classroom.
We celebrated the 100th day of school, P.S. 173 style. Students had a blast learning and demonstrating their newly acquired knowledge of numbers and quantities up to 100. Our students and teachers arrived at school dressed in style, 100 year old style. Students were encouraged to create an item to represent the 100th day of school. Some students decorated shirts, created poster boards and other items that showed 100. This was a great way for the children to work creatively and express their interests. The children showed off their creations and celebrated all of their hard work during this school year so far.
Dear 173 Family,
We cannot believe this is our 3rd Winter Read Aloud! Special guest readers, hot chocolate, fun activities and the beauty of a great read aloud. Thank you to our guest readers who shared their love of reading with our students. We are so proud of our community and its members, "Together we are making a difference!" Enjoy the pictures!
Kids always want to dress up in costumes. Book Character Day allowed us to participate in the fun of dressing up while doing activities aligned with our Reading and Math curriculum. Students partook in a variety of activities dealing with characters and character traits. Some teachers created centers and had students rotate from one activity to the other. At PS 173 Book Character Day is a fun way to celebrate characters from our favorite books, next time celebrate reading with us!
PS 173 is preparing for our first annual Fall Fun day! Students had the opportunity to decorate their classroom pumpkins, being creative as possible. These works of art are being displayed inside and outside of the classrooms. We are all so excited to see the results!
On our last day of spirit week teachers and students grabbed a jersey, t-shirt or hat from their favorite sports team. School spirit week was a great way to "lift our spirits" and pump us up to beat the math test next week; or finish the school year strong. Everyone demonstrated school pride by exhibiting school colors, showing off wacky hats, dressing up silly or strutting team goods. We were the definition of PS 173 school spirit all day, all week, all year; "Together We Make A Difference."
Hawaiian shirt Day was a positive reason for PS173 to wear their brightest clothes. Whether it was fancy floral, polka dots or paisley, as long as the clothes had color and pizzazz, it was a perfect way to continue our spirit week. We were able to be social and energetic wearing our best and brightest garments, the most hideous shirts, the most outrageous outfit and getting students to contribute towards school pride while having a really good time.
When PS173 has wacky clothes day on the calendar, it's the perfect time to get silly with our students. Students love to play pretend, its an opportunity to get good giggles by being werid and they are reminded Silly is Good.
School pride day at PS173 is important because it sets the tone for our spirit week. When our students are involved in our spirit days, it demonstrates a passion for PS173 Pride that is immeasurable and contagious. We believe that school spirit translates into higher expectations of one’s self and surroundings, pushing for positive changes at school. There were several ways we showed our PS173 school pride today: wearing our PS173 t-shirts, rocking our school colors yellow and blue, and cheering during our days events. Engaging in these simple actions is great for our school community because it encourages a common bond between fellow students, faculty, and staff alike. Share in our PRIDE for PS.173.
We are entering a joyous and festive week marked by our spirit days. Crazy hat/hair day is the beginning of the many fun days to come. We asked the students to put on their silly hats or crazy hair styles and come to school. The atmosphere was exhilarating, teachers and students had fun with a day full of laughter and joy through our Mad hat/ hair creations.
