Los Lobos Gear Up for the 1st Annual Student vs. Teacher Basketball Game

3/10/2018

March Madness is the NCAA college tournament. P.S.173 celebrated with its own 1st annual Students vs. Faculty basketball game. With students and families cheering on, the girls & boys school basketball teams battled the teachers/staff out on the court. The boys and girls basketball teams were excited to show the teachers how P.S.173 Wolves play ball. During the game students played hard against the teacher, Brian showed off his ball handling skills and might have broken a teachers ankle or two, while Angelina drove hard to the basket with several floaters that went in. All the students came to play hard against the teachers and showed their excellent skills throughout the night.
At half time students from the audience were invited to take free-throws. Many of the students were excellent shooters. As the game continued the students' basketball skills weren’t enough to beat the teacher who came home with the Honoree Bragging Rights trophy. Teachers won the game by one point through a game plan of team work. At the end each side showed fierce competition and it was all fun and games. Don’t worry students' there is always the next event to beat the teachers. Great Job everyone!

America Scores and P.S. 173 have been teaching students' soccer and poetry for several years now. Their goal has been to bring the love of soccer, poetry and a healthy life style to our community. A lot of people have taken notice including ESPN Deportes series “Futbol in America” with Denny Alfonso. During America Scores Winter camp ESPN Deportes visited P.S.173 to interview some of our coaches and players. Denny Alfonso interviewed our very own Mr. Jimenez and Devin Rosario about soccer in America and our Washington Heights community. We can’t wait to see our students and faulty on TV representing P.S.173.

America Scores Poetry Slam Champions 2017

The stage was set, our poems were written, and the PS173 poet-athletes were excited. It was finally time for America SCORES New York’s 14th Annual Poetry SLAM!

A favorite event of kids and coaches alike, the Poetry SLAM gives our talented poet-athletes the opportunity to show off their creative writing skills to peers from other schools and their families.

Shannon Schneeman (Executive Director) and Zach Gomes (Program Director) opened the night by welcoming all the poet-athletes as well as their coaches, teachers and families before bringing the host for the night, Natalie Caro onto the stage.

Many schools took the stage and did an amazing job. Then, we hit the stage with our first poet Esmarlin performing My Playground which was short and sweet, but very effective. Our girl’s team poem Kindness is Cooler received great reviews.  Our PS 173 boys, did not go down without a fight with poems entitled Why I’m Me by Devin, This is My Life by Christopher, and our group poem We Are.

While the judges were making some difficult decisions, our poet-athletes expressed themselves in a different way through a wildly competitive dance party! Everyone brought their best moves to the stage and definitely impressed the crowd.

Finally, it was time to announce the winners. Christopher received an individual Spirit Award  for the poem This is My Life. PS 173 Girls were the big champions winning America Scores Poetry Slam Champions 2017.

Incredible sportsmanship and creativity was shown by all of our poet-athletes, and we could not have asked for a better SLAM!

P.S.173 Lady Warriors America Scores Soccer Champions

6/7/2017

Winning a championship is no easy task yet the P.S.173 Lady Warriors girls soccer team was on a mission this year, and thanks to a never-wavering focus and playing strong defense the entire season, the Lady Warriors accomplished their goal of winning a first-ever America Scores championship. What proved to be key for P.S.173 this year was the play of a stingy defense. Coach Baldinger pushed these girls, she felt they had an opportunity to have a great season. She instilled mental toughness and encouraged them to persist and work hard even against strong opponents. You can see that these girls feel inspired and supported by their coach. In the final game, P.S.173 Lady Warriors faced their toughest rival this season, P.S.4, a team also from our Washington Heights Community. The focused pony-tailed forward, Amanda Nunez cut through  the defense and drove a low shot past the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper. The pinpointed goal confirmed P.S.173 Lady Warriors as the America Scores championship team. The defense clutched the game with a strong effort from all of its defenders for the final minutes. The Lady Warriors played some of the smartest defensive plays leading them to become CHAMPIONS. CONGRATULATIONS LADY WARRIORS !

Our PS173 Young Runners learn valuable lessons about how to set goals and make activity part of their daily lives. With the help of their coaches, students learn to run distances from 1 to 4 miles. You could imagine the wear and tear their sneakers go through. That's why it was a pleasure to see Ms. Rodriguez give them  their running shoes. Now they are ready to go the distance. Run over to our Young Runners Page to see more pictures.
